The best hotels and restaurants in and around Interlaken

Interlaken lies between two lakes, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, and that is actually reason enough to visit. But there is more. Much more. From this city, you can explore the Jungfrau Region by train, gondola, or e-bike, jump out of a helicopter above the Eiger North Face, or take a boat trip with the whole group in a Hot Tug across Lake Brienz. A Hot Tug, we hear you thinking? An electric boat that is actually a large jacuzzi, heated to 38 degrees, with which you cruise through the Alps. You want this! Add to that the fact that Interlaken has a surprisingly strong hotel scene, from hip and budget-friendly to grand five-star luxury, and you understand why you are staying here longer than planned. These are our favorites.

The Hey Hotel: nice and relaxed, right in the city center

The Hey Hotel: nice and relaxed, right in the city center

The Hey might not be the most luxurious hotel in Interlaken, but it is certainly one of the most affordable and cozy. Centrally located, the vibe is right (young, relaxed, a bit urban), and the rooms are fine. On the ground floor is restaurant Lisi if you are in the mood for a good, no-fuss dinner, and the Hey Bar & Lounge *with terrace* is exactly the place where you end up after a day outdoors and don't get up again. Unsure what to do the next day? The hotel is happy to help you plan. From a lake cruise From crossing Lake Thun to jumping out of a helicopter over the Eiger North Face – they arrange it for you.

Hotel Metropole: dining on the 18th floor

Hotel Metropole: dining on the 18th floor

The Hotel Metropole is the tallest building in Interlaken and therefore a landmark in the city. Most rooms have a balcony with a view of the Jungfrau, but the real highlight is the panoramic restaurant Top o'Met on the 18th floor: views of both Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, the mountains in the background, and seasonal dishes on the table. You can also visit during the day for lunch or a cappuccino and croissant. Those wishing to give their legs a rest after a day full of adventure will find a fitness room and sauna there. And that Hot Tug On Lake Brienz? They can tell you all about it here.

Hotel Alpenblick Wilderswil: small village, big kitchen

Hotel Alpenblick Wilderswil: small village, big kitchen

Wilderswil is a small village ten minutes from Interlaken. And there, in a chalet parts of which are already 400 years old, sits Hotel Alpenblick. Quiet, authentically Swiss, and the restaurant? Seriously good. Chef Richard Stöckli has a Michelin star and 16 Gault Millau points, all in a chalet in a village where there is practically nothing else. If you want a more relaxed dining experience, take a seat in the Village hall for a rösti or other Swiss bistro dish. Free breakfast, free parking, and a bus that runs from Interlaken via Wilderswil to the Grindelwald ski lift. One of the more affordable options in the region, and secretly perhaps one of the nicest.

Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa: the big work

Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa: the big work

If you want to really splurge, this is the place to do it. The Victoria Jungfrau has been around for over 150 years and remains the most impressive hotel in Interlaken. Five stars, right in the city center, with the Jungfrau right before your eyes. The 5500 m² Spa Nescens is a world of its own: multiple swimming pools, saunas, steam baths, massages, and better-aging treatments. Do you want fine diningRestaurant Radius, by chef Stefan Beer, holds a Michelin star and works exclusively with ingredients found within a 50-kilometer radius. Prefer Italian food? Then Ristorante e Pizzeria Sapori is the place for you. And the next morning, simply order room service and watch from bed, croissant in hand, as paragliders land on the lawn right in front of the hotel.

Hotel Interlaken

Hotel Interlaken

Hotel Interlaken is situated right by the train station, in one of the most beautiful parts of the city. It is a historic hotel with renovated rooms, a good breakfast buffet, and a restaurant where you can simply drop in for a cheese fondue in the evening – because, well, you simply have to do that at least once on a holiday in Switzerland. And if you really want to do something special during the day: the hotel is happy to arrange a snowshoe experience to the Stockhorn, where, after a two-hour hike past frozen mountain lakes and high peaks, you finish with a cheese fondue in an igloo. Wow.
